What is a Doppler Ultrasound?
A Doppler ultrasound, also known as a colour Doppler test, uses high-frequency sound waves to measure blood flow through your arteries and veins. They are used to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions, including blood clots and poor circulation. A Doppler ultrasound can be used as part of a blood flow study and usually focus on a defined area such as the carotid arteries in the neck that supply blood to the brain, or the veins of the legs to assess Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Doppler is also used to assess leg and arm arteries as well as renal arteries.
A Doppler ultrasound can detect the following:
- Blood clots in leg veins – Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
- Blockages in the arteries (mainly due to the build up of cholesterol)
- Poor blood circulation
- Bulging arteries (aneuryms)
- Thinning of an artery (stenosis)
- Restricted blood flow in the fetus during pregnancy
